First Grade
Reading this year provides practice with varied literature. The year begins with simple readers and progresses to more challenging stories with longer sentences and some unfamiliar vocabulary. Spelling transitions to word study for patterns through memorization. First grade will also begin learning cursive.

Mastery of addition and subtraction is a focus of first grade math. Other skills include, but are not limited to, skip counting, money, time, introduction to fractions, and place value.
- Math Grade 1 Rod & Staff
We are continuing the study of our history and heritage as Christians. This year focuses on the entrance into Canaan through the end of the Old Testament. We will continue memorizing scripture.

A science-based theme is derived from weekly read-aloud books. Any observations or activities are always followed by teacher-led discussions.
