SECOND Grade

Language arts

Reading at this level includes phonics pulled directly from the student’s reading and daily exposure to good literature. Expository reading is added at this level to develop the skill of reading for information. Spelling is phonics-based and foundational for subsequent years. Students will continue learning cursive with proper grammar and sentence structure being taught and reinforced through copywork and daily activities.

Mathematics

With the mastery of addition and subtraction facts from previous years, students will focus on building speed with these facts and will be introduced to borrowing and carrying. Other skills taught and reinforced include, but are not limited to, place value, money, time, measurement, and geometry.

Christian Studies

This year students will cover the entire New Testament beginning with the Gospels and will engage in a thorough study of the life of Christ and the early church.

Students will be introduced to early American life and states and capitals.

Science

Students will memorize and be able to recall a variety of facts including, but not limited to, the order of the planets, parts of the human body, and types of rocks and minerals. They will also learn the difference between planets and stars, the respiratory system, and be able to describe the water cycle.
